Notes

  • In addition to editing, Phillips also ran the publishing company S. C. Phillips & Co.
  • His obituary in The Paper-Maker (1 Nov. 1917) states that when he began The Paper-Maker, Phillips’s offices were at 46 Aldersgate (1891). Mitchell’s (1895) then puts Phillips on Fleet St., as does the 1892 issue of Stationery World, while the BLT19 Database and Willing’s (1899) puts him on Cannon St. (his primary place of business, once the company was founded)
  • Phillips wrote a series of articles in The Paper-Maker about his travels for the paper trade, called “My Note Book,” under the pseudonym “The Shadower”
