The Printers’ Pocket Guide, Ready Reckoner, Almanac, and Diary

Start Date(s)

  • 1899 (Shattock)

End Date(s)

  • 1914 (Shattock)

Editor(s)

City

  • London, England (journal itself)

Type of Content

  • Contains an almanack, diary, and calendar, associations and societies, parliamentary reports, etc. (Waterloo Online)
  • The Printers’ Pocket Guide, Almanack and Diary has become so well known that it scarcely needs any introduction to our readers. In the issue for 1904, the publisher (Mr. A. C. Couch) has as usual compiled a great deal of useful and interesting matter, including legal notes, list of fair houses in London, printing and kindred trades directory, ready reckoners, &c. Copies of the Guide may be obtained post free for 2 1/2 d, and the low price at which it is issued places it within the reach of all” (“Reviews of Books” p. 16)

Notes

  • Listed as just "The Printers' Pocket Guide" in Shattock (p. 53), this is not technically a trade journal. We are including it, however, because of its longevity, its trade content (beyond the diary/almanack), and its inclusion in many early lists of print trade journals
  • The wrappers of this issue bear the title “The L.S.C. Compositors', Printers', and Typographical Pocket Almanack and Diary, Handbook and Ready Reckoner” (COPAC)
  • “Although not exactly an attractive example of printing, the 1901 edition of The Printers’ Pocket Guide (by A. C. Couch, 219 Shakespeare-road, Herne Hill, S. E.; 2½d., post free) meets a decided want amongst the fraternity. Its list of printers’ societies, unions, and associations is alone worthy of acquisition; whilst almanac, diary, ready reckoner, and various technical information make up a useful compendium” (“New Publications” p. 48)
  • Publisher's address (LSC): 7-9 St. Bride Street, Ludgate Circus (journal itself)
