Notes

  • After arguing and breaking with Raithby, Lawrence & Co. over The British Printer, Robert Hilton was ordered by a judge not to publish any similar/competing journal for 10 years and within 100 miles of Leicester or London. Hilton violated this injunction, publishing The British Art Printer and Lithographer in January/February 1895. Raithby, Lawrence & Co. took Hilton back to court, won, and got another stay. But Hilton sneaked out a second number (backdated to March/April), changing the title to The Art Printer and Lithographer. Hilton got out two more numbers (May/June and July/August) before he was forced to shut down. All of this is recounted in Young (pp. 39-41) and "Raithby, Lawrence & Co. v. Hilton" (p. 202)
  • “The firm of Messrs. Eddington & Cadbury has been dissolved and the business ‘closed out.’ The proprietors of The Art Journal have, therefore, taken the printing and publishing of that journal under their own control” (“Prints” 145)
  • Publisher's address: 37-39 Essex St., Strand ("Representative" p. 496)
